Candy Store Waste Tracking: Turn Loss Records into a Display Decision

A useful waste record identifies a preventable handling problem. It does not begin with a target percentage that staff must achieve.
Start with the decision
Record the item, quantity, date and disposition reason at the point it leaves saleable stock. Keep damage, expiry, preparation loss and unexplained shortage separate; they lead to different decisions.
Work through the details
Select one recurring reason and observe the handling path. For crushed packs, compare shelf depth, refill carton position and the way customers remove a product before ordering another fixture.

A planning example
Suppose several gift packs are crushed on one deep shelf. Mark the exact product and location, photograph the arrangement without personal information, and note whether the damage appears before display or after repeated refills. Trial a shallower facing only after confirming the supporting shelf and stock arrangement.
Check it in the shop
Trial one change in one bay for a stated period. Compare like products and trading conditions, record new problems as well as improvements, and retain the original product-safety decision even when the waste figure rises.
| Recorded observation | Check first | Possible controlled trial |
|---|---|---|
| Packs crushed at one position | Fit, overhang and actual handling | Change one shelf boundary or placement instruction |
| Spills during replenishment | Container access and refill task | Use a smaller approved refill batch |
| Damage found at delivery | Receiving record and supplier response | Improve documented receiving checks |
| Repeated unsaleable date condition | Actual date records and range demand | Review ordering with the rotation procedure |
| Unexplained missing stock | Count and movement evidence | Investigate variance; do not label it waste |

Frequently asked questions
Should waste and unexplained stock differences share one reason code?
Keep them separate. Known product disposition and an unresolved counting difference need different evidence and follow-up.
