Candy Store Cycle Counting: Resolve One Stock Location at a Time

Cycle counting is a repeated check of selected stock, not a replacement for clear product locations and controlled adjustments.
Start with the decision
Define a zone and the exact item identifiers to count. Record the time and how movements during the count will be handled. Include reserve stock and display stock without counting the same carton twice.
Work through the details
When a difference appears, recount independently and investigate receipts, sales, transfers and unit conversions. A bag, inner pack and case can describe different quantities even when the product name is identical.

A planning example
A count shows fewer bags in the front display but an unopened carton is found below the counter. Record both locations and the unit conversion before concluding that stock is missing. A revised location label may prevent recurrence without changing the inventory quantity or buying more shelving.
Check it in the shop
Only an authorised person should approve an adjustment. Keep the reason and evidence with the count, then examine whether mixed bins, hidden reserve space or unclear labels are creating repeat errors.
| Check | Evidence to inspect | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Current case configuration and count unit | Recalculate with the confirmed conversion |
| Location | Shelf, backstock and transfer positions | Reconcile stock in the agreed scope |
| Cutoff | Sales, receipts and transfers around the count | Align the physical count with the record time |
| Condition | Held, reserved, sample or damaged status | Keep quantity and status decisions distinct |
| Approval | Original count, recount and explanation | Authorize a supported correction or retain an unresolved item |
