Candy Store Closing Checklist: Make Exceptions Visible to the Next Shift

A closing checklist is useful when it records what needs attention, not simply that someone ticked the boxes.
Start with the decision
Walk the actual closing route from sales floor to storage and service counter. Include stock protection, approved equipment shutdown, cash custody and the checks assigned by the shop's own operating procedures.
Work through the details
For an unfinished task, record the location, risk, temporary action and responsible person. Do not let a general 'completed' mark hide a damaged fixture, held product or unresolved equipment problem.

A planning example
At closing, one wall-cabinet door will not latch. Record the cabinet reference and temporary action under the shop procedure, rather than ticking 'fixtures checked'. The opening team needs to know which area needs attention and who will arrange the repair before it is put back into normal use.
Check it in the shop
Leave the next shift a short, current handover with the exceptions first. Review repeated obstacles: a blocked cupboard, inaccessible switch or poorly placed packaging shelf may need a layout change rather than another reminder.
| Area | Finish condition | If still open |
|---|---|---|
| Final service | Transactions and collection statuses recorded | Leave an approved order or transaction reference |
| Product checks | Required observations and storage steps completed | Identify held stock and the decision owner |
| Cleaning | Approved sequence completed for the actual surface | Identify unavailable area and temporary control |
| Fixtures | Visible concerns assessed through the approved route | Record location, restriction and responsible person |
| Handover | Next responsible person can find open items | Obtain acknowledgment and clarify missing details |
Adapt to the actual shop procedures; sensitive security, payment and personal information belongs in restricted records.

Frequently asked questions
Should the checklist include every possible problem?
Keep routine checks concise and provide a clear exception route. Long lists become less useful when staff cannot identify the urgent unfinished task.
